The history of olives and olive oil

From prehistoric times, the oliveoil used to cover different needs.

In the plateau of Methana found by Deffner the oldest mill (as calculated in fourth millennium BC) - which indicates that the use of oil was known at the time.

In the Homeric times, the oil is mainly used for spreading in the body and not for food or light.

  From
linear B, found at Pylos and where we read the word po-qa (fovri / fovras), we conclude that  the fruit of  olive tree is used as feed for livestock. Moreover, the constant references to fragrance oils, makes us conclude that, at least in this era, the use of oil is  primarily found in religious ceremonies, for grooming the body and to manufacture medicinal ointments.
